M&B Discount Warehouse is a general retail outlet in the coastal town of Mablethorpe. The outlet sells a broad range of products from hardware and homeware products to outdoor goods. With the high volume of sales, the outlet store relies on having modern payment terminals and ePOS systems to cater for their over-the-counter transactions. With the growth of card and contactless payments during the pandemic, having the right supplier in place is now more important than ever. Having changed service provider to EVO Payments just over a year ago, we caught up with the owner, Martin Waxman, to discuss the impact it has had on his business.
There was no specific “aha” moment that sparked a sudden desire to switch to a new payment solution provider, instead it was a myriad of issues that put Martin off his incumbent provider. With EVO Payment there are no PCI fees and while this was a factor in Martin’s decision to change providers, he also spoke about the other reasons that influenced his decision. “With my previous supplier my transactions weren’t being cleared quickly enough and the paperwork side wasn’t great. The invoicing was unclear and the device would spin out huge long printouts. Also if I rang up their customer care looking for help I’d just be left hanging on the phone.”
On the recommendation of a friend, Martin chose to switch to EVO Payments, through one of EVO’s reseller partners Paymetryx, and he hasn’t looked back since. “It was a very straightforward process to sign-up and start using the new system. The card terminals themselves were easy to use. While the layout was a little different here and there, it was simple and straightforward nonetheless and I got used to it immediately,” Martin says.
When asked whether the new EVO Payment solution helped overcome the challenges he experienced before, Martin told us that all his issues, big or small, were resolved when he made the switch. “Everything is better. The card terminal even connects to the WIFI better. The WIFI admittedly is not great around here at the best of times. In the past, we would lose the signal just walking around the store, but with the new machines this is not a problem and they hold a stronger signal when I walk around,” Martin says.
“Even small things like the printout from the machine. With the previous provider, it would print out a huge ream of paper – such a waste – but with EVO, the readouts are nice, concise, tidy and clear,” Martin added.
Martin received help implementing his new service from local service provider and EVO reseller partner Paymetryx. They installed the new terminals and got Martin’s team up to speed using them and they continue to provide support when required. “Unlike my previous experiences, I get an answer when I ring up. Any problems are sorted out straight away,” Martin says.
Overall Martin has saved money, received a quicker and better quality of service and has been paid significantly quicker than compared with his previous provider. Martin has also noted that in the past year, there has been a 10-15% increase in card usage over cash payments. “The pandemic appears to have increased the public’s preference for card and contactless payments so I am very happy that I spoke to Paymetryx and made the move to EVO Payments just in time for this societal shift in buying behaviour.”
