Background

Originally with just an online presence, Pettitt and Boo’s first retail store opened up around 18 months ago offering an alternative to mainstream pet foods. They sell ‘raw and natural dog treats’ and from the word go footfall was great and the business took off. Customer loyalty grew instantly, with the vast majority of pet owners who trial Pettitt and Boo’s natural and healthy diet for their cats and dogs never going back to the traditional brands.

We sat down with co owner/director, Adrian Pettitt, to discuss his business and the impact EVO Payments has had on helping it grow.

Payments proving problematic

Before using EVO Payments as their payment solution, Adrian mentioned that they had been using an App for around 3 or 4 months when the store opened, although it proved problematic from the word go. “The problem was the associated high rates. Additionally, you’re getting hit with transaction fees associated with every transaction.

“We had also previously used one of the mainstream UK card acquirers which came with a terminal that had a GPRS SIM card in it, which again was causing us all sorts of problems. It would switch networks, often at the wrong time and it wouldn’t pick up a network even if you were right beside a mast. So we wanted a device that would have a seamless internet connection,” Adrian says.

The EVO Payments solution

Adrian knew he needed an alternative payment solution and so he shopped around and discovered EVO Payments. When pressed on the reasons for choosing EVO Payments, Adrian was clear and concise.

“It all boiled down to cost, Adrian says emphatically. At the time we didn’t know what their support was like and how easy the system is to use. But we could see how much more affordable the costs were and that’s why we initially decided to go with EVO Payments,” Adrian says.

“While cost was the initial reason, it became quickly apparent that their customer support was exceptional, and we haven’t looked back since. It was a very easy process to set up once the credit card terminal was sent to us. The card terminal is very user friendly and it can connect back to our phones via WiFi as well. So if we were to go off-site, to a show for example, we can take the card terminal with us and connect it to our phones and use it as easily as if we were back in the store,” Adrian says.

“Indeed at the moment it’s handy to bring out to customers at the door so they don’t have to walk inside. This is important considering the global pandemic and social distancing measures,” Adrian added.

Confidence and professionalism

Adrian has also noted the EVO Payments card terminal has been a hit with his customers. “It’s a secure payment process that gives customers confidence in our professionalism – compared to just using a mobile device or App or something like that,” Adrian says.

“It’s a very user friendly card terminal, easy to use, and it does exactly what it says on the tin so to speak,” Adrian says when asked what he liked about the terminal.

High level of support

Adrian also appreciates the level of support he receives from EVO Payments. “If we ever had an issue we would get through to customer support very quickly and we generally get the answers that we need or the assistance to get up and running again within minutes. So basically what I’m saying is that the service support and tech advice for us has been absolutely tip top,” Adrian says.

With regards to the future, we asked Adrian if EVO Payments will be important to his business as it grows. “Around two-thirds of our business is done through credit cards at the moment for us so credit card payments are key, and in that respect EVO Payments is definitely helping us grow our business,” Adrian says.

Conclusion

When asked if he would recommend EVO Payments, Adrian finished the interview with an emphatic yes. “Yes, I would recommend EVO Payments to other small businesses like ourselves. In fact, I have already gone to the hairdressers next door to us,” he says.
